  • 5 stars Raw, powerful, and thought provoking. Sub Rosa is something beyond a circus show. It challenges the audience to delve deep into parts of the human psyche that can be uncomfortable to confront. Their incredible skills and innovations within the circus arts left me feeling thrilled, thoughtful, and emotional. I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The lighting was beautiful, the costumes were stripped down and simple leaving nothing to distract from the skill of the performers, and the rigging and tech ran so smoothly that transitions from scene to scene were hardly noticeable. This was definitely a 5 star show for me and a standing ovation. Well done Fractal Tribe!

  • 1 star The entire show was a series of over-sexualized tricks where women were constantly stripping their clothes off while the men remained fully dressed the entire time. I was waiting for the stripper poles to ascend from the ceiling, However, that never happened. If you want to see spectacle with no real depth of feeling, emotion, and human connection, by all means, go to this show. I wish I could get that hour back.

  • Dazzling acrobatics and dance moves! Plus a gorgeous aesthetic sensibility throughout. Fractal Tribe has truly professional-grade artists with a wide-ranging repertoire of circus talents. My favorite piece was a startlingly emotional acro-dance duet late in the show.

  • Completely moved, stunned and overwhelmed with love for the beautiful way this tribe have demonstrated the art of acro. And perhaps more importantly, summarized and showcased what it looks like to be part of such a supportive, open and trusting community. THANK YOU Fractal Tribe for so succinctly describing why we play and what we are truly building. Check out some of last years Pitch Catch 2015 students in their inspiring Ted Talk: You are never too old for airplane.

  • I’d give it five stars just for entertainment value, but since I’m reviewing the entire experience, I’m going to have to go with four (but I’d do four and a half if I could). You could tell this was their first show of this run – no major problems, but there was plenty of subtle shakiness and minor kinks being worked out. Nothing that detracted much from the experience though, and I’m sure they’ll end up flawless by the end of the run, if not before. Still, the performers’ tremendous talent and creativity was dazzling and well worth seeing – I’d definitely see the show again, or anything else by this group, and would strongly recommend it. I should also emphasize that the YouTube clips I saw of the group spoke a lot more to the kind of act they are than did the artists’ description in the program guide – so you may still want to consider seeing them even if the description doesn’t sound exciting to you. This may also be a product of the first-show-of-the-run situation, but I do have to mention that the production values could have been a bit better. The sound, while generally well-designed, was unacceptably, painfully loud for long stretches; and I really couldn’t tell if the sustained high pitches and the screeching, creaking sounds at points were unintentionally amplified byproducts of the stage equipment or were purposeful (and, I think, misguided) attempts at avant-garde noise. A few other minor details (why was there an extra belayer on stage at the end with just a T-shirt and shorts and no costume to match the others?), but that was mostly it. Overall though, an excellent, stunning, unique, not-to-be-missed show.

  • I worked with Joe last night and he was such an amazing coach! He was able to break down advanced moves in a way that made them feel very safe and easy for me. He has a knack for noticing the details when you are doing something incorrectly and can pin point exactly what you need to do to change the movement to make it work. This workshop should not be missed. I think it will be very helpful if you are working on more advanced poses and standing moves.

  • 5 stars this performance was all heart. The imagery of the “dark forces” threatening the soul’s innocence were beautiful and evocative. I was encouraged and inspired in my own life. The talent and skill of the performers was breathtaking. Wow!

  • It’s impressive, it’s majestic, and it’s kind of boring. The performers were on point, and the production value was top notch for the most part (why was there a random guy not in costume?) But, I’ve seen Fractal Tribe before, and there wasn’t anything in this performance that really stood out to me as exceptional. These performers are insanely talented, but I hope that they will take their talents and move onto bigger and better productions. This one seemed to focus on sexualized women and rapey dance. I think that Fractal Tribe can do better than that.

  • 5 stars Amazing show. A moving story and visual display of the good and bad parts of a young lady and the trials faced growing into full womanhood. This show was a very well put together effort by some very talented and driven artists, who are both great athletes as well as great dancers. Having watched the show very carefully, I am kind of surprised by the comments on some other posts. To characterize the show as a series of “over sexualized tricks” is neither accurate nor reasonable. The level of skill and athleticism needed to create the differing aspects of the show is astounding, and not possible to the average person. Athletes can be very beautiful, and even sexy. These performers, both men as well as women, demonstrate that fact well. The show is a superb effort to show, through choreographic and athletic means, the journey through a woman’s life. The conceptual aspects of the show are well thought out and executed, and the visual aspects of those aspects are stunning. At least one of the parts, where the performer hangs from pure friction between her head and the apparatus is almost impossible, and amazing visually. The comments about the men remaining fully clothed, well, I just don’t know how to speak to that. Most of the men wear only pants, and the women are always covered modestly. And, in the end, this is a story about a woman, a girl. All the men are supporting and incidental to the main character. As a dance/gymnastic performance, the scenery, the wardrobe, the people performing, are great, and well in keeping with what I expect to see in a first rate creation by atists of the medium.

  • Lucid is a wonderful fusion of circus arts, music, and narrative, surreal theater. I felt the production succeeded both as a community event that drew on some of the best circus and musical talent in the area, and as a professional production that could be presented anywhere. It was well worth seeing from the standing-room only section (the show was sold out). I look forward to seeing future developments of Lucid, and will be sure to get my ticket in advance!

  • 5 stars Innovative skills and original approaches to circus thematics and theatrics give this ensemble show contemporary appeal. The awe and mystery of circus create new realms onstage and off ceiling as a variety of apparatus from trapeze to floating ladders come into play. Athletic artistry such as Fractal Tribe is known for makes this a production to catch!

  • Lucid will take you through interesting and exciting journey of a woman's dreams analyzing her motivation as she copes with the different relationships and social stressed in her life. The pleasant mix of acrobatics, humor and live music enhance the visual and physical theatre aspects of this unique piece. The clever mix of sound engineering (canned and live sound ) as well as the intimate setting, transcends it's traditional proscenium staging presentation, and creates an almost in the round feel that gives the audience a sense that they are experiencing it with her.

  • She floated fantastically above the bed, as we sat and watched the waking world fade into a dream world. Performers artfully flipped and twirled off and through each other as live instruments beat out an energetic tempo; to which my heart responded with awe, and my face with a deep smile. It is rare to witness a show that entertains, and inspires the audience with the art of the performers as well as cracking open the soul-armor to human purpose, consciousness, wakeful-life, and coaxes us with its story into examining our own story, and pulling our focus to those moments that are most important. “LUCID” is such a show. The premier was a collaboration of very talented performers, composers, and writers, artfully executed with a large portion of passion and entertainment. This is something fresh and inspiring. Don’t miss it!

  • What a show! It’s an experience full of color and light, unique sounds, amazing costumes, moving music, and innovative artistry! The level of trust and breathtaking skill is especially impressive! The rope work becomes another technical, athletic, dynamic, weaving itself into the story. The beautiful acro duo dance starts with uncomfortable male dominance and abuse. The female partner fights back and kicks his butt! His retaliation is met with her more gentle energy and it works! What better possible outcome in this crazy world?! All of these passionate professionals put themselves wholly into every exciting moment. I’m going back ~ to watch the details of the beauty unfold again.
